Synopsis
Most people imagine the cold is the hardest part of living
at the South Pole. It is not. The cold is predictable. It is the silence that
catches you off guard.
For nearly three years, Dale Herschlag lived at the South
Pole, becoming one of fewer than 120 people in history to complete back-to-back
winter seasons in total darkness.
[url] Air Force meteorologist trained to forecast the worlds
most violent weather, he arrived prepared for the cold. What he was not
prepared for was the psychological weight that emerges when the horizon
disappears, and the stillness refuses to let you look away.
In South of Silence, Herschlag takes readers beyond the industrial
grit of McMurdo Station and into the heart of the most isolated environme.
