NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC Now 12" 80s: 1980 (NOW Music launch a new archival series with NOW 12" 80s, focusing on the extended, remixed, and reimagined single versions that defined club culture at the start of the decade. The first instalment, 1980, charts a moment when the 12" single became an essential creative format, giving producers space to reshape hits for the dancefloor while offering listeners alternate versions that often eclipsed the original releases. Spread across four CDs, the set features 45 extended, full-length, or remixed versions, the majority originally issued on 12" singles, with one notable exception - the longer 10" version of Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark's "Messages". The collection moves from late-disco dominance into early synth-pop and new romantic territory, reflecting the shifting sound of the charts at the dawn of the 1980s. Disco and post-disco classics from artists such as Blondie, Lipps Inc., Donna Summer, Chic affiliates, and Kool & The Gang sit alongside U.S. funk, Brit-funk, dub-inflected UK experiments, and early synth-pop statements from Spandau Ballet and OMD. The result is a wide-ranging snapshot of a year when the dancefloor exerted enormous influence across multiple genres. A deep dive into the extended single culture of the era, highlighting producer-led versions that helped redefine pop, disco, funk, and emerging electronic styles.
