VAN MORRISON Astral Weeks (Back To Vinyl Series 2020 UK/EU 8-track LP pressed on 180-gram Black Vinyl. Van Morrison's second album was recorded over three sessions at Century Sound Studios in New York in the autumn of 1968, witha group of jazz session musicians, bassist Richard Davis, Modern Jazz Quartet drummer Connie Kay and guitarist Jay Berliner among them, who had never played with Morrison before and, by most accounts, barely spoke to him at all during the sessions. Davis later recalled there was no rehearsal, no lead sheets, and that Morrison simply retreated into an isolation booth and stayed there. The musicians essentially built the album's arrangements on the spot, with Davis effectively leading the group by feel. Producer Lewis Merenstein has said Richard Davis was "the soul of the album," and Rolling Stone, ranking it the 19th greatest album of all time, called the supporting cast its "crowning touch." This edition faithfully replicates the original 1968 cover artwork, factory sealed.
